The Dubai Canvas 3D Art Award is the world’s first award that recognises creative excellence in 3D art. The festival is organised by Brand Dubai, the creative arm of the Government of Dubai Media Office.
The festival provides a platform for renowned 3D artists from across the world to exhibit their creations. Apart from 3D art displays, Dubai Canvas features workshops and street performances.
The ceremony took place at the Dubai Canvas Festival, City Walk. The Award, which carries a total prizemoney of AED 2.3 million (US$650,000), was launched at the second Dubai Canvas Festival in March 2016.
3D Artists all over the world were invited to enter the Award by submitting works depicting their interpretations of the Award theme of ‘Happiness’.
A jury of renowned international and local artists evaluated the submissions to name three winners. There was also awards in two special categories – ‘Best Emirati Participation’ and ‘People’s Choice’.
Brand Dubai flew the 25 candidates to Dubai and covered their accommodation costs. The 25 candidates were selected based on the artwork they submitted via the Brand Dubai website and email. The artists executed their artwork today during the Dubai Canvas Festival, announcing a total of 4 winners.
Tony Cuboliquido was named the first place winner while Danila Shmelev and Leon Keer were named the second and third place winners respectively. Tomotero Saito won the People’s Choice Award, which was decided based on public votes.
According to the jury, the innocent, playful, dynamic and interactive qualities of Italian artist Tony Cuboliquido’s winning work captured the theme of ‘Happiness’ best.
Director of Brand Dubai Maitha Buhumaid said: “The Award generated significant interest from the global 3D art world. Over 80% of the international community of accomplished 3D artists submitted entries for the Award. The winning and shortlisted artists represent the cream of global 3D art. Apart from recognising great artistic work, the Dubai Canvas 3D Art Award seeks to raise interest and appreciation for this unique art form. We will continue building on the success of the first edition of the Award to foster excellence in 3D art as well as further enhance the development of Dubai’s cultural and artistic landscape.”
All the works shortlisted for the Dubai Canvas 3D Art Award, together with the works of four Emirati artists, are being displayed at the Dubai Canvas Festival taking place in City Walk from 1-7 March 2017.
