3D sketching sounds surreal but it’s more than a fantasy, and it’s here in the form of a digital app.
Gravity Sketch was established in 2013, in London as project between four Innovation Design Engineering students of the Royal College of Art. The company received backing for the launch of the app by InnovationRCA, UnLtd See Change, and the James Dyson Foundation. Gravity Sketch is also a part of the San Francisco-based founder.org startup acceleration program.
3D sketching is the next evolution of sketching: taking a concept idea and sketching it into 3D. With the rise of augmented and virtual reality, the students at the RCA clearly saw an opportunity. Consequently, creating an app for designers to sketch in 3D. One of the additional features allows the 3D sketch to be 3D printed.
Gravity Sketch looks to simplify 3D design. Thus reducing it to an intuitive, imaginative and almost an effortless creative process. And when they say simplify, they’re not kidding. Consequently, the team have developed the software in such a way that it could use a touchscreen as an input. By using touch and gesture, the user is able to shape designs with ease. Literally no technical experience is required. So from the moment the app is installed, you can unleash your creativity without limits.
“As ways to consume 3D content are exploding with mega trends like VR, AR and 3D printing, there is a growing need for super easy ways to create 3D content. Gravity Sketch is beautifully answering that need, by offering a very intuitive way to sketch in 3D with a touch screen” said Alban Denoyel, Co-founder & CEO of Sketchfab.
The team anticipates the software finding its way into model makers, product designers and schools. Over the past 5 years, the advance of tablets and the introduction of them in schools has rocketed. It only makes sense tablets are utilised to aid learning. That coupled with the advance of 3D technologies such as 3D Sketch, the possibilities are endless. Ultimately the app will allow youngsters to get familiar with the realms of 3D, from 3D sketching to VR and AR.
The Gravity Sketch app is available to download from the App store.
